The Income Team within The City of York Council is looking for two enthusiastic and committed individuals to join the team dealing with all aspects of billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax and Business Rates. There are 2 posts available, 1 Permanent contract and 1Temporary contract. Working within a highly professional team you have the opportunity to carry out all aspects of Council Tax and Business Rates work including registration, recovery, and dealing with customer enquiries by telephone and face to face whilst also assisting at court. You would be updating Council Tax and Business Rates records on a daily basis in accordance with regulations, local policies and procedures to achieve the best possible collection rates in an effective and efficient way. Negotiating with customers in debt will be necessary to agree payment arrangements to avoid further recovery action. You would also be expected to liaise with Enforcement Agents regarding cases passed over to them for collection, and attend the Magistrates Court as part of a team to meet with customers who have been summonsed to court for non-payment of council tax or business rates.
A great communicator you'll enjoy dealing with customer enquiries in a polite and professional manner in what can be often challenging circumstances. You would be responsible for managing an allocated workload to ensure that performance targets are achieved and collection is maximised
The successful candidate will be adaptable and embrace change in a continually developing service whilst being a good team player possessing a proven record of IT skills and high quality customer service.
Experience of the Council Tax and/or Business Rates service areas would be preferable, however, full training will be provided.
Working from home would be considered for candidates with experience in this role, or after full training and satisfactory experience.
As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express him/herself spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.
